Harry Bishop

Biography

Harry Bishop (1924-2015) was manager of the Federal Fish Hatchery in San Marcos when President Johnson announced the property switch with Southwest Texas State College (now Texas State University) at the inauguration of former SWT President James H. McCrocklin in 1964. The Fish Hatchery, now the site of the J.C. Kellam Building and the Theatre Center, was the oldest hatchery west of the Mississippi River.

LBJ100 Oral History Project

Harry Bishop talk about how he began a 28-year career managing the San Marcos Federal Fish Hatchery under Fred Richan, who was the project leader. He describes the process of transferring the original Hatchery property to the College and the Federal Government trading it for property on McCarty Lane near the College Farm. He also talks about sending some brood stock from the hatchery to LBJ’s ranch; since San Marcos didn’t have anywhere near the amount of requested, he called other hatcheries in the area to round up enough catfish to fulfill the request – which allowed German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer to go fishing while visiting the ranch.
