Biography

Dr. Kenneth H. Margerison, Jr. (1946—) was born in Philadelphia.  He received his AB (1967) from the University of North Carolina at Chappel Hill and his MA and PhD (1969) from Duke.  Before joining Southwest Texas State University in 1972, he taught history at Sacred Heart College in Belmont, North Carolina.

Dr. Margerison regularly teaches courses at the undergraduate level on the Renaissance and Reformation, Old Regime Europe, the French Revolution, and Modern France. At the graduate level, he conducts a seminar on eighteenth-century Europe.  In addition to teaching, he served as chair of the Department of History from 1994 to 2000.

He received the Faculty Senate Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1990, was awarded the Mariel M. Muir Excellence in Mentoring Award in 2010, and was named Piper Professor in 2013.

Dr. Margerison talks about how he came to Texas State (then SWT) in 1972 and the faculty members he worked with since his arrival.  He also talks a bit about the history of Phi Alpha Theta, hiring new faculty, and his optimism about the future of the department.
