Biography

Dr. James A. “Tug“ Wilson (1938—) was born in Born in St. Paul, Minnesota.  He earned his BA (1960), MA (1963), and PhD (1967) from the University of Arizona and taught at Angelo State University before joining Southwest Texas State University in 1970.  His area of expertise is in the history of the American Southwest.  He taught at Texas State for 31 years.

Dr. Wilson served as chair of the Department of History in the early 1990s and was named Professor Emeritus of History in 2001.  

 

History Department Oral Histories

Dr. Wilson talks about his observations of the history department from the time he was hired in 1970 to the date of the interview in 1991.  He discusses hiring practices, the growth of liberal arts education, and the department's flexibility in creating new history courses.
